Social media has completely taken the world by storm. From a personal perspective, sites like Facebook are great for staying in touch with friends and family that are scattered throughout the world, or even just to help organize local events. Facebook has proven to be a huge hit with companies as well though, since it is a great way for them to reach out to their clients, and even offers advertising opportunities.
Advertising on Facebook
There are a few different ways to advertise on Facebook. The first is a more direct route where a company uses their Facebook page to make announcements or to comment on any questions that their customers have posted. A less direct way for companies to advertise on Facebook though is through people liking either their Facebook page directly, or even having the option on an outside site for people to like whatever is on the page, which can then be shown on that person’s Facebook. This is a great way to advertise because it ensures that a large number of people will be able to see the like. Not only that, but there is an image and a brief blurb about the page that can help to draw in more users.
The first thing that most users are going to see on Facebook is the image from a like as opposed to the text. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the image is larger and placed at the front, so it just naturally draws more attention. But the second more important reason is that an image can just convey more information, and on a cluttered Facebook page this can make all the difference in actually getting noticed. Many Facebook users are just going to skim through their newsfeed and look for anything that pops out. Usually this will be images, or posts from specific people.
There is a potential issue though with images that are liked from outside sites. The image that gets displayed on Facebook doesn’t always relate to that page, or it might just not be the ideal image to draw in attention. This can especially be a problem where the page that was liked had numerous images on it, as Facebook will just pick one to use.
A simple way around this problem is to limit the number of pictures that are available to reduce the chances of getting an image that is out of place or doesn’t draw enough attention. This ultimately is a weak solution, and one that isn’t even always applicable. Fortunately there is an easy solution that is much more efficient for getting across the right image. A simple code can be put in that acts as a meta tag and will essentially communicate with the Facebook like button and tell Facebook which image it should be displaying. The code is <meta property=”og:image” content=””/>. It is important to keep in mind that the image must be at least 50 x 50 pixels in order to correctly be displayed.
