While the internet has revolutionized the way that we are able to get information, it can actually be quite a challenge to keep up with all the different sources of information that are available. This is something that not only businesses need to consider, but general website owners as well. Even when websites present their information right on the front page, there isn’t the guarantee that viewers are going to want to constantly check the site for updates, especially when you consider how many sites the average viewer looks at and needs to keep track of. Fortunately for viewers, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) exists to make everything easier.

What are RSS Feeds?

RSS feeds are something that viewers are able to subscribe to so they can see the latest updates from their sites in one convenient place, so they don’t have to constantly check a number of different places or have an overloaded and confusing set of bookmarks to try and navigate through. This is especially important for any sites that offer temporary deals or sales, or when sites are only carrying a limited supply of a product. While RSS feeds are great for anyone wanting to view sites, they are also an important advertising tool for website owners.

Advantages of RSS Advertising

The most obvious advantage of RSS advertising is being able to reach a larger audience. Not only that, but RSS advertising is a great way to offer special deals and promotions, which will ensure that the audience actively checks the RSS feed. For websites that consistently have to update information an RSS feed is also great because it helps keep the audience from missing things, especially when the information is spread out over multiple pages. Another incredibly useful feature for the owners is they are able to see how many people are subscribed, giving them a general idea of how effective their website in. This might not seem like that big of a feature, since it is possible to track the number of hits a website gets. While this is true, that doesn’t mean that the people visiting the site are actually interested, but if they subscribe to the RSS feed then they are obviously interested in the content of the site.

Disadvantages of RSS Advertising

RSS advertising isn’t a surefire method of advertisement. Ultimately, there really is no way to guarantee that viewers are going to get all the information presented on a website. RSS feeds can become cluttered, so viewers might still find themselves missing out on information, especially if it has been a few days since they last checked their feed. RSS feeds are also rather limited, being meant just to show blurbs to draw in an audience.

Fortunately these disadvantages are made much less severe when you consider the fact how easy it is to set up an RSS feed. Even if some of the advertisements are missed, the website owner at least knows that their audience is interested since they continue to stay subscribed.
