In order for a website to become popular it is important to understand how search engines work. Most visitors are going to come to a website because they were directed from a search engine. With Google being one of the top search engines it shouldn’t be a surprise that most web sites are going to specifically be concerned about where they rate in terms of Google’s search results. Recently, Google has put a new type of algorithm into effect, which is known as Google Hummingbird.
Normally changes to an algorithm aren’t that big of a deal since there are always little tweaks and updates that ultimately don’t have too much of an impact on search ratings. Hummingbird is being toted as much more then just a minor update though, and according to Google, 90% of websites worldwide are going to be effected by the changes introduced by Hummingbird. This is certainly a bold claim, but ultimately one that should be taken with a grain of salt. Many webmasters are likely worrying about their ratings dropping, but one of the big things that Hummingbird is designed to do is refine the search algorithm to help filter out spam results, such as scam sites designed to just draw in visitors.
Webmasters are encouraged to check Google Analytics or their Webmaster tools to see if anything has changed with their sites ranking. Hummingbird has actually been in effect for a little while now, so chances are if there has already been a change there won’t be another one. Ideally, most legitimate websites are going to see a small increase in their ranking, but if sites are starting to see a decline it would be worth carefully checking out the website to see what might be causing issues, paying specific attention to any changes in the end of August since this would be when a drop from Hummingbird would become visible.
